Aalst in 1128 – Visual Historical Reconstructions

Commissioned by the City of Aalst, I created two paintings depicting how the city may have looked in the year 1128, during the conflict surrounding Iwein of Aalst. The project began with a digital 3D reconstruction of the medieval city, based on historical and archaeological research. This model served as the foundation for sketches, which were refined through feedback rounds before being finalized as detailed paintings.

The reconstructions are grounded in the findings of archaeologists Jan Moens and Koen De Groote, who mapped out the original city walls and structure. The finished artworks were integrated into heritage panels now permanently installed in the public space around the Saint Martin’s Church.

The project is part of a broader heritage initiative focused on Iwein of Aalst, a 12th-century figure who led a rebellion against the Count of Flanders. The conflict culminated in the Battle of Hertshage in 1128, where Iwein’s supporters achieved victory. The panels present this story in its historical context and make it accessible in the modern urban environment.

Projects like this are developed in close collaboration with historians, archaeologists, and commissioning partners. Thanks to the step-by-step approach—from 3D modeling to final artwork—there are multiple opportunities for revision and refinement, ensuring both historical accuracy and alignment with the project’s objectives.
