Digital Reconstruction of Pieter Bladelin’s Castle

For the Province of East Flanders, I created a digital 3D reconstruction of Pieter Bladelin’s castle in Middelburg.

Based on historical and archaeological research, I designed a detailed 3D model in SketchUp, which was further refined and rendered in Blender for a photorealistic result. The illustration offers a glimpse into how the 15th-century castle may have looked at the height of its splendor.

The project was developed in close collaboration with Prof. Dr. Wim De Clercq (Ghent University), who provided scientific support in medieval architecture and spatial context. The final rendering is on display at the historic castle site in Middelburg and bridges past and imagination—connecting heritage with technology.

While illustrating Pieter Bladelin’s castle, I imagined what he himself might have looked like to better understand the world he lived in and to place the architecture in its proper historical context. I drew this portrait as he is depicted by Rogier van der Weyden.
