Houses through time

For this project commissioned by Lares, I reconstructed one representative house for each major period from the Neolithic to the High Middle Ages. Throughout the process, I was technically supported by archaeologist Johan Hoorne of De Logi & Hoorne.

I created a one-minute 3D animation film that shows the construction process of a prehistoric house from the ground up, offering an accessible introduction to how people once built and lived.

From sketch to structure: eight period houses in 3D

The process began with archaeological excavation plans, which I converted into 3D layouts. Using simplified low-resolution timber structures, I provided the client with previews for feedback and approval. Once approved, I built and rendered the detailed high-resolution structures. The final models were enriched with textures, construction details, and lighting for visual accuracy.

These making-of visuals demonstrate the layered approach behind each reconstruction, where visual precision is grounded in archaeological evidence.

Neolithic Period (ca. 5300–2000 BCE)

Bronze Age (ca. 2000–800 BCE)

Late Bronze Age (ca. 1100–800 BCE)

Iron Age (ca. 800–50 BCE)

Late Iron Age – Early Roman Period (ca. 150 BCE – 50 CE)

Roman Period (ca. 50–450 CE)

Early Middle Ages (ca. 450–1000 CE)

High Middle Ages (ca. 1000–1250 CE)

Illustration to Scale Model

The final illustrations were used in a public exhibition where each digital reconstruction served as the blueprint for physical scale models. These models brought the 3D visuals into the tangible world, allowing visitors to explore historical architecture in miniature form. The exhibition offered both visual storytelling and tactile engagement with past domestic life.

European postage stamp

One of the reconstructed houses from this project was selected for a European postage stamp as part of the "Archaeology: Caring for the Past, Caring for the Future – Postzegels voor Europa" series.
