Unearthed Under the Old Couple

As part of the archaeological investigations at the historical town hall site in Maldegem 'the old Couple', I created three detailed illustrations that bring the medieval history or the two buildings to life. These reconstructions are based on the findings of over 160 excavated skeletons, as well as historical and archaeological research into burial practices around medieval churches.

The visuals were developed in close alignment with current archaeological interpretations and aim to support both academic understanding and public engagement with the site’s layered history.

Participation project

The exhibition presented the results of the remarkable archaeological excavation beneath Maldegem’s historic town hall complex. Over 160 medieval skeletons were unearthed, offering new insights into centuries of local burial practices.

A unique public participation project was attached to the dig, inviting local volunteers to help clean and document human remains. I was proud to be part of this collaborative effort, which connected science, heritage, and community in an exceptional way.
